REL Classic 98
The newest subwoofer from REL is a wonderful throwback to the earlier days of the company. The Classic 98 blends the design philosophy of their iconic models with REL’s modern technology to create a product that adds a new twist to a retro sound. Using an acoustically suspended 10” downward-firing driver the Classic 98 fills the room with a warm sound profile that will be familiar to anyone who was a fan of REL’s offerings from earlier years. While the 98 lacks the raw power of some of their other current models (such as the T/9x), it still brings plenty for the $1400 price point - and it’s the character that’s the real standout. This unit has really brought a distinct warmth to every system we’ve tried it with, and from early tests we’ve especially loved the contrast we’ve gotten from pairing it with faster speakers such as our line of Magnepans or the new YG Talus that’s featured in the photo.
It’s not just about the sound though: the 98 ticks a lot of other important boxes for us too. With the driver out of view this unit has an understated elegance that brings the focus to the lovely walnut finish and makes the Classic 98 a sub that’s easier to blend in to the look of any audio or theater system than pretty much any alternative. Setup was a breeze with the sub playing and tuned in within minutes of opening the box. And of course, it comes with the usual promise of excellent build quality and customer support that has made REL one of our most trusted brands for years here at Glenn Poor’s. The Classic 98 really fills a unique niche in our current lineup of subwoofers - if you’ve been feeling like modern options are lacking a bit for personality then this could be exactly what you’re looking for. As always, don’t just take our word for it though, come in and listen for yourself!
