Turntables
Vinyl playback can be a rewarding and engaging way to listen to music. Without adding too much to the endless vinyl vs. digital debate, I will leave it at the fact that nothing sounds quite like a good recording pressed cleanly onto great vinyl. A well-designed turntable that includes a quality tonearm, solid plinth, quiet motor, and tuned platter can make all the difference in sound quality. But more than just sonics, because a turntable is one of the only components in your system you interact with physically every time you use it, top-grade build quality and design play a meaningful role in the vinyl experience. No matter the price range, or what style of deck you are looking for, you will be able to find something you can fall in love with-and a precision setup is included with every table or cartridge you buy.

BASIS: Few turntable brands put as much time, effort, and precision into their R&D as Basis. Despite his passing, they continue to be physical examples of founder A.J. Conti’s relentless quest for nothing less than perfection. Basis has gotten turntable design down to a hard science without compromising on their one purpose: reproduction of an art. Their timeless design manages to both stand out and fit right in to any high end system--and they sound absolutely beautiful.

CLEARAUDIO: The goal of high-end analogue is to perfectly merge technology, workmanship and design and subordinate them to one single target: the best possible music reproduction. At Clearaudio, all development, design and production remain firmly in the hands of a perfectly experienced and attuned team of specialists who never lose sight of that goal, and who uphold the Clearaudio philosophy and high quality standards.

EUROPEAN AUDIO TEAM: Owing to the vision and leadership of owner Jozefina Lichtenegger, EAT puts music first with everything they do. Their great analogue products--including turntables, tonearms, amplifiers, and even vacuum tubes--are designed to reproduce the “meaning and spirit” of the original recording as close as possible.

GOLD NOTE: Founded when a young engineer, Maurizio Aterini, began designing his own turntables--the benefits of analogue sound are at the forefront of every product Gold Note makes. Now they have a full suite of high quality, beautifully built products from cartridges to speakers. While they all integrate excellently together, a Gold Note turntable fits comfortably into any hi-fi system

LUXMAN: Taking design cues from the brushed aluminum and dark wood of the Japanese amplifiers and turntables from the 60s and 70s, the Luxman decks are stunningly beautiful. They are equipped with high-torque motors, precision-machined high-rigidity platters, and a tonearm that can support a wide-variety of cartridges. If you are looking for a vintage-inspired design but you want the sonic benefits and build-quality of modern engineering and materials, the Luxman turntables are exactly what you want.

MARANTZ: When a company with a storied hi-fi history spanning back nearly 70 years comes out with a high-end turntable, you know it is going to be good. Many brands enlist an OEM company to make a turntable and then just slap their own name on it--the Marantz belt drive is an exception to the rule. It is unique in design, top-shelf in build quality, and sounds beautiful.

MCINTOSH LABS: For some listeners, a coherent visual and sonic aesthetic is a priority when building their hi-fi system. McIntosh’s sui generis design and tonal character leads some discerning listeners to a front-to-back McIntosh system--for them, the McIntosh line of turntables is a brilliant choice. They do not compromise one iota in quality or sonic performance. They are all spectacular devices--the glowing platter, sapphire and ceramic tonearm bearings, and a very solid plinth make them great choices for the Mac lover.

MOFI: MoFi turntables are relatively new to the market, but what went into their creation came after years of experience in recording and creating vinyl records (Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs), as well as vinyl playback. Allen Perkins from Spiralgroove is recognized as one of the guiding lights in design of both turntables and tonearms, and his collaboration in MoFi's turntable designs ensured something very special. Likewise, enlisting HRS to design the anti-vibration "feet" was a stroke of brilliance. Built right here in the Midwest in Ann Arbor, MI, the turntables are sure-fire winners in an increasingly crowded category. It is hard to beat the value-for-money of these MoFi decks.

NEW ACOUSTIC DIMENSION: For over 40 years, NAD has been crafting some of the best value and best sounding components in the market. Their classic, timeless black design has been ported to two impressive turntables, both with well-designed tonearms, platters, and motors--and both fitted with an Ortofon cartridge (OM 10 and 2M Red, respectively).

REGA: Designed and built in the Southeast of England, Rega’s iconic design and precise engineering has taken this nearly half-century old brand to the top of the hi-fi world. They consistently show up in best-of categories in every single price range, and they have won numerous engineering and design awards--especially for their forged tonearms, which in my opinion are a big part of how Rega is able to get such good sound without spending a wild amount of money.

SPIRAL GROOVE: Building on more than 20 years of high-end audio design experience, co-founder Allen Perkins uses a development method he calls Balanced Force Design® to conceive and manufacture every Spiral Groove product. With Balanced Force Design, the interaction between idealized design concepts, materials, and engineering possibilities are balanced in components that are pleasing to look at and operate, extremely reliable, and always convey the music. It’s a balance of physics, engineering, science, art and intuition.

TEAC: For entry-level turntables, TEAC utilizes experience that comes from decades of building every type of component to create something that represents excellent value and build quality. They also make exceptional all-in-one turntable systems for customers who want something simple without sacrificing quality.

TECHNICS: Technics is perhaps the most storied turntable brand in all of hi-fi. Launched in 2016, the SL-1200G combined Technics' experience in traditional analogue technology and advanced digital technology, while redesigning all components from the ground up. Its outstanding performance literally rocked the Hi-Fi market and redefined the reference for direct-drive turntables. The revival of the legendary SL-1200 series has been nothing short of an absolute success.
THORENS: For nearly a century and a half, Thorens has been manufacturing the worlds best musical playback devices in Switzerland (and now Germany). They have a wide range of excellent products at all price ranges, from fully automatic turntables (like the one pictured above) to high end direct drive decks and even reel-to-reel machines. We are very proud to be a part of this company's rich history and to bring these wonderful products to the Midwest.
